Streets & Sidewalks

SNOW REMOVAL
Residents of the City of Ripon must remove all snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm.  Failing to do so, will result in the Dept. of Public Works removing it and the cost assessed to the property owner along with a penalty.  At no time is snow and ice to be deposited onto the street.

 


WORK IN THE RIGHT-OF-WAY
The City of Ripon requires a permit for any work done within the right-of-way such as constructing, reconstructing, repairing, altering or grading any curb, curb-cut, or driveway apron.  A right-of-way permit is also required for utility work. 

 Public Way Disturbance Permit

Permits must be obtained from the Dept. of Public Works office located at 570 Aspen St. or online under (Permits) before work has begun and the following standards must be met:

 

  • Residential driveways may be 20 ft wide at property line, no wider than 25 ft at curb line, at least 4 ft from street corner and maintain adequate sight distance. Concrete aprons are required where curb and gutter exist.  Apron should be constructed to provide a sidewalk area 1 ft off the property line and 4 ft wide. Concrete should be 6 in thick.  Reinforce wire is not necessary.  Curb may not be cut down to allow access, it must be removed and replaced with depression curb.  
  • Sidewalks must be at least 4 foot wide, located 1 foot from property line and slope 1 inch for 4 foot of width.  Concrete should be 4 inch thick.  Reinforce wire is not necessary.  Concrete through driveway should be 6 in thick.

Street-Sidewalk Obstruction Permit This permit is required for using the street or sidewalk for non-excavation, non-utility, and non-vehicular activities that obstruct a street or sidewalk such as placement of a dumpster, moving pods, landscaping materials, scaffolding, use of construction equipment for abutting property, and other activities.
Public Way Disturbance Permit Required prior to initiating any excavation or other type of work that will disturb any public street, way or utility.
