Update on Water Quality Concerns and Resolution
The City is aware of recent concerns regarding discolored water in certain areas and is committed to keeping the community informed of our ongoing response.
Investigation Summary
On October 10th, the City received initial reports of discolored water, primarily from neighborhoods around Metomen, Fenton, Jackson, and Scott Streets. Staff conducted a thorough investigation, sampling for iron, chlorine, and phosphates at several points, including hydrants, water mains, and the finished water tank at Well 5. Despite elevated iron levels in some samples, Well 5 initially showed no indication of contributing to the discolored water.
However, after additional testing on October 23rd and 24th, our team confirmed Well 5 as the source of the issue. Upon further inspection, a layer of iron sediment had settled at the bottom of the Well 5 finished water tank. After isolating Well 5, the team conducted an extensive flushing of affected areas, which cleared the discoloration. No new complaints have been reported since these measures were implemented.
Next Steps
To prevent future issues, the City is consulting with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), chemical suppliers, and water system experts to address the iron sediment concern identified at Well 5. Well 5 will remain offline until all corrective measurers have been completed.
We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we work toward a long-term solution to ensure water quality. If residents experience water quality issues in the future, we advise you to contact the City Water Department directly: https://www.cityofripon.com/waterutility
